How to Nail Your Brand Voice – and 5 Steps to Get There!
I know you’ve got big dreams and goals cooking up in that beautiful brain of yours. You may be at the start of your entrepreneurial journey or are looking to revamp your branding.
You know what you want to say to your customers or audience, you can feel it in your bones – you’re just not sure how to communicate it. One of the most important steps you need to take in your digital marketing strategy is to develop your brand voice.
This is a lot easier said than done.
Your brand voice needs to be able to be communicated across multiple channels. It needs to be able to reach your specific audience in a way that grabs and hooks them. Above all else, your brand voice needs to reflect your brand!
What is a Brand Voice?
Back to marketing 101. As a health and wellness copywriter, one of the biggest hurdles I help my clients overcome is fine-tuning their brand voice.
This is a lot easier if you have a whole marketing team, or if your business is based on a personal brand. But that’s not everyone. Even if you have a general idea of what your brand voice is like, articulating it and communicating it to your customers is a whole other set of skills.
So what exactly is a brand voice?
Your brand voice is the personality of your business. It’s the impression that people get when they interact with your brand, whether it’s through your website, social media, email marketing, copywriting, products, or services.
A brand voice is what sets companies apart from their competitors. The top marketing agencies understand how key this is to creating and exciting a winning marketing strategy. Your brand voice is the jumping-off point for everything else in your branding and marketing strategies.
Now that you’ve brushed up on your digital marketing lingo, it’s time to answer the question you’ve all been waiting for. I know you’re on the edge of your seat…
How do you create your brand voice?!
5 Steps to Nailing Your Brand Voice
Whether you’re starting from scratch or looking to finesse the magic you’ve already created. I’m here to offer five of my top tried and true tips for nailing your brand voice.
1) Brainstorm
When you’re full of ideas it can be hard to get a clear idea of where you’re going. That’s why it’s helpful to start by writing down everything you can think of.
Here are some questions to ask yourself when brainstorming your brand voice:
How do you want your audience to feel?
What brands, people, places, etc inspire you?
What sets you apart from the rest?
What are the goals, values, and vision of your brand?
I highly suggest making your brainstorm as messy as it needs to be. Take a giant piece of butcher paper and have at it. You may even want to include pictures, scents, or anything you need to do to help give you some clarity on your brand voice.
2) Research
You want your brand voice to be unique to your company, so when it comes to research, proceed with caution. Still, you want to know what else is out there.
One so that you don’t repeat what another brand is doing, but also so you can fill in the gaps of what’s missing in your niche. Research helps you craft a branding strategy that gives you an edge because you’re able to get clear on how what you offer is different from the rest.
Research isn’t just about direct competitors, it’s also about learning about branding, PR strategy, and what other companies inspire you who aren’t necessarily in your niche.
3) Create Your Identity
Now it’s to merge what you’ve gathered in your brainstorming and research phases and start to build your identity and create your brand voice. A really helpful way to do this is by creating a brand deck.
A brand deck is a comprehensive branding strategy that lays out your brand’s voice, as well as aesthetic, and answers all the questions we posed in your brainstorming session.
While having a professional brand deck is a great way to showcase your brand, a simple Google Doc with a clearly defined brand voice can be more than enough to create an effective marketing strategy.
4) Ask for Feedback
You don’t exist on an island. They say it takes a village to raise a child, while the same is true for a brand!
While I’m sure what you’ve created is incredible, you need feedback before putting it in motion. You want to make sure that what you’re trying to communicate through your brand voice is being received in the way you intended, and feedback is one of the best ways to fine-tune your message and your branding.
Ask your loved ones, mentors, employees, or of course – me! I’m always here to give honest feedback and help shape your brand voice into exactly what you envisioned.
5) Try it Out
One of the coolest things about building a brand in this day and age is that people want authenticity. Authentic branding also allows for growth. While of course, you want to get it right the first time, that’s just not always the case. Or what seems perfect at the time needs to change as your business grows – because it certainly will grow!
There’s only so much research and brainstorming you can do before you just have to put the pedal to the metal and say “Go”! Trying out your brand voice and seeing how it works is part of the growth journey of your brand.
Remember that these steps aren’t linear. Sometimes you’ll need to hop around and jump back and forth before you finally arrive at a place that feels right for you and your brand.
